ABOUT NOIG
The National Otolaryngology Interest Group (NOIG) of Headmirror is an organization led by medical students, residents, and faculty in otolaryngology to serve as a primary resource for medical students interested in pursuing a career in otolaryngology. This initiative was proposed by medical students and residents and supported by academic faculty who identified the absence of an established national student-led organization in otolaryngology, although similar organizational bodies exist and have proven beneficial in other medical and surgical specialties. The vision behind NOIG is to provide high quality educational resources to learn about the specialty and to facilitate a successful residency match for interested medical students, including those who face barriers in obtaining mentorship, research, and clinical exposure. Students who may face added barriers include, but are not limited to, allopathic medical students without a home residency program, osteopathic medical students, and underrepresented minorities in medicine.
MISSION
NOIG strives to cultivate interest, education, and professional development, and to provide an infrastructure for mentorship in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery. NOIG aims to promote diversity, inclusion, preparation, networking, and career development to propel aspiring otolaryngologists into careers of leadership and service.
LEADERSHIP
Organizational leadership exists at a national and regional level to ensure that medical students and existing otolaryngology interest groups across the country can have access to resources and be easily connected with otolaryngology faculty and mentors. NOIG leadership, in collaboration with the greater Headmirror team, will increase awareness and promote education in otolaryngology, recruit resident and faculty mentors, and deliver to its student members the resources necessary to aid in preparation for a successful match into otolaryngology residency.
REGISTRATION
To facilitate efficient communication regarding developments and opportunities, all students who desire to be a part of NOIG must register to be a member, regardless of an affiliation with an otolaryngology interest group at their respective institution. To register as an individual member, please follow this link.
Existing otolaryngology interest groups are encouraged to register with NOIG. Our goal is to maintain a dynamic network of active otolaryngology interest groups nationwide to facilitate regional and national communication to maximize medical student exposure to otolaryngology via their own institutional interest group and the NOIG platform. To register your institution’s otolaryngology interest group, please follow this link. Additionally, check here for a list of registered interest groups.
MENTORSHIP
Mentorship in otolaryngology can help shape careers and help students navigate the process of career development and residency success. In an increasingly virtual world, mentorship has become more difficult to obtain outside of a home institution. This can be even more difficult for medical students without a home program, osteopathic medical students, and underrepresented minorities in medicine. NOIG hopes to play an important role in the expansion of mentorship opportunities outside of institutional and regional barriers. Individualized mentorship tailored towards the mentor and mentee is a priority. Our Chair of Mentorship is a role dedicated to facilitating mentorship opportunities for interested medical students. Students who are interested in obtaining an otolaryngology mentor are encouraged to fill out this form.
EDUCATION
NOIG aims to increase awareness and promote education in otolaryngology. Most medical students are limited in their exposure to otolaryngology in the pre-clinical and clinical medical education curriculum. NOIG will help fill existing gaps in the knowledge of medical student members through educational initiatives in basic otolaryngology subjects. Our Chair of Education is dedicated to organizing educational content in various forms for our organization. A running list of upcoming educational webinars and workshops will be populated soon.
RESEARCH
Research is a foundational component of otolaryngology, and participating in meaningful research during medical school remains an important aspect of matching into a residency program. NOIG aims to develop a living database of ongoing research projects and research fellowship opportunities throughout the nation with faculty and programs that are actively seeking medical student participation. This database will be maintained and updated on a regular basis. We recognize that certain types of clinical and basic science research are difficult to perform off-campus, but several research options do exist for interested medical students. Our Chair of Research is dedicated to seeking out and maintaining a database of research opportunities for medical student members. If you are interested in participating in a research project or being paired with a research mentor, please reach out to us through this form. Check here for additional research opportunities, including scholarship support.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Our Chair of Diversity and Inclusion is a role dedicated to promoting diversity within all facets of NOIG and the specialty of otolaryngology. Visit Headmirror’s diversity and inclusion page for more information and a list of relevant opportunities.
